Cape Town's Park Road used to be nothing more than a thoroughfare, but in just more than a year, it has become something of a mecca for hungry urban dwellers morning, noon and night. New to this buzzing stretch is the recently opened Pasta Factory and as the name suggests, the industrial-style space is first and foremost a place where fresh pasta is being produced and offered in the adjacent restaurant and factory shop.
Stars of the culinary show are of course the variety of pastas and after sampling the antipasti (think bruschetta, carpaccio and traditional vitello tonnato) customers can wander up to the pasta stations and make their choices.
There are more than 20 homemade sauces and 10 different kinds of pasta, including wheat-free tagliatelle as well as potato gnocchi. Chefs prepare your meal while you watch, adding any extras you may prefer, from pine nuts and extra Parmesan to chilli and olives.
The whole process takes a remarkable two minutes and the result is a steaming bowl of pasta any Italian mama would be proud of.
